About Calvin

Calvin is a Physicist, artist and author of the illustrated book Return to the Absolute. His artwork explores ideas about the nature of reality and consciousness through visual concepts. They are typically produced using oil paints on wood, canvas or linen and built up in layers. Sometimes as many as fourteen layers, and around 300-400 hours can be put into a single piece.

Calvin’s fascination with radiant spheres is shown in his work through his regular use of these forms to depict consciousness, as well as energetic balance. His background in physics BSc(Hons) is also a strong influence on his work, which is evident in the regular use of light and radiant energy, as well as the underlying ideas behind his paintings.

He intends to draw the viewer in using familiar subject matter combined with symbols to stimulate reflective thought. Vibrant colours are used to create an uplifting feel.

Calvin operates from the perspective that, at a fundamental level, there are no separate parts to the universe, all beings and creations are energetically inseparable, and the concepts in his paintings are created to communicate this idea.

Originally from Scotland, Calvin attained his degree in physics at Glasgow University and currently resides on the Gold Coast working in the field of lasers and optics. He has been painting with oils for the last 10 years, attending numerous classes, and working closely with his mentor, local abstract artist Timm Murany.

Although you will find descriptions for most artworks within the site, the purpose of Art of Reality is to challenge you to find your own meaning in each artwork, and ultimately what reality means to you.
